General Rules & Regulations
Race Day Rules
The Pinewood Derby is a tradition in the Boy Scouts. Each Pack will have their own rules for their derby, though there are a few general rules that tend to be used by most. There is not one official set of Pinewood Derby rules, so it is important that you find the rules for your specific location.
Keep in mind that most rules pertain to the construction of the cars. Make sure you are familiar with your race’s rules before you begin working on your car, otherwise you might have to start from scratch or be disqualified. Common car construction rules include:
- Bottom Clearance (often 3/8”)
- Width Between Wheels (often 1 ¾”)
- Width of the car (often 2 ¾”)
- Car weight (often 5 oz)
- No starting device allowed, car must be free-wheeling
- Pinewood block must be used for body of the car
These are just a few of the rules that are commonly found in many races. Often you will be required to use official materials when constructing your car. Be sure to check on the allowance of accessories before decorating your car as well.
Other rules will include how the races will be run and winners chosen. Generally these will include rules on what to do in special situations as well, such as when a car leaves its track, or is damaged. There will be rules on car inspection and registration as well. Be sure to look at your local rules as often they will have information on deadlines and what you can and cannot do with your car after registering.
